Phoques Bay

Only minutes from Yambacoona House, Phoques Bay is a wild and unspoiled stretch of coastline with miles of pristine surf breaks to explore. This coastline is excellent for surfing, swimming, and fishing.

Yellow Rock Beach

King Island boasts a stunning coastline allowing beachcombers to explore beautiful shorelines in solitude. Yellow Rock Beach is part of Phoques Bay and it features golden sand, freshwater gullies, and vibrant vegetation. The 1906 shipwreck of the Shannon paddle steamer can also be seen on the shoreline.

Lavinia State Reserve

Named after a shipwrecked schooner that hit a reef in 1871, Lavinia State Reserve features pristine coastline and one of the best beach breaks in the world at Martha Lavinia Beach.

The reserve stretches from Sea Elephant River estuary in the south to Penny’s Lagoon and Lake Martha Lavinia in the north. The final stretch of road to Martha Lavinia Beach requires a four wheel drive vehicle, or you can join a guided King Island tour.

Pennys Lagoon

For many locals, Pennys Lagoon is a great place for a swim with clear water and white sand. For nature lovers, this lake is one of only three examples in the world where freshwater sits higher than the surrounding water table.

Pennys and nearby Lake Martha Lavinia are a must visit. They are the ideal place to cool off on a summers day and enjoy a picnic or BBQ.

Disappointment Bay

This beach is rated by many locals as their favourite. Located just off Cape Wickham Road on the way to the lighthouse, Disappointment Bay is a must-visit for swimming, surfing, fishing, and beach walking.

Accessibility onto the beach has recently improved with installation of a walkway.

Cape Wickham

The Cape Wickham Lighthouse is the tallest in Australia and looks striking set against the rugged coast line. With the recent addition of the world-class Cape Wickham Golf Links, this destination has increased in popularity.

For the non-golfers, the view from the clubhouse looking over Victoria Cove at the 18th fairway, while savouring a drink or a meal will also leave a lasting impression.
